Devils know they have to be better in Game 6
[info]sara_annofyh

Ten minutes into Wednesday night’s Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals, the Devils had a 3-0 lead over the Rangers. But 17 seconds into the third period, the game was tied, 3-3.

The Devils may have escaped with a 5-3 victory to go up 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, but they know a much better effort is needed tonight if they expect to clinch a berth in the Stanley Cup final.

“We understand that [Wednesday] was probably [the Rangers’] best game in the series,” Devils forward Dainius Zubrus said yesterday on a conference call. “We didn’t hold on to the pucks and play with very good puck possession. Some of the decisions we made with the puck weren’t great. I thought we definitely could have played better. There is definitely room to improve for us.”

Fast starts are nothing new for the Devils, who have out-scored the Rangers in the first periods of the series, 6-1. The problem has been the other two periods, specifically the third, when the Rangers have out -scored the Devils, 8-5 (or 6-3 if you take away two empty-net goals by each team).

“I don’t care when we give up the goals, as long as we win the games,” Devils coach Peter DeBoer said yesterday. “I guess what that tells me is that we’ve been leading some games in the third period and they’ve found a way to open some up. I know a couple of them have been empty netters. I’m not concerned about our third periods.”

Perhaps he should be, because the Devils have not trailed entering the third period this series, and have managed to lose two of the five games, almost letting another one slip away Wednesday.

“The first 10 minutes of the first period of the game, we did a great job of breaking out and coming out of our zone and putting on the pressure. The second and third periods … we couldn’t do that. They came back in our zone and spent too much time in our zone,” Patrik Elias said.

After scoring three goals on their first five shots, the Devils managed only one more shot the entire first period, and only 12 over the game’s final 50 minutes.

“We just have to play the same way. The same aggressive way we played at the beginning of the game,” Elias said. “Play the same way, same energy in the third period, too. Don’t just sit back. As long as we get more goals than they do, then we are fine.’’

If they score more goals than the Rangers tonight, the Devils will advance to their fifth Stanley Cup Finals, and first since 2003.

“Once we sit back a little bit with the lead, we get ourselves into trouble. Obviously, there is no tomorrow for them, so I’m sure they’re going to have their best game, and we’ll have to be that much better to beat them,” Zubrus said.

INSIDE SOFTBALL: Best yet to come for youthful Preston
[info]sara_annofyh

It was the most heartbreaking of defeats, one that Preston lost by a mere inches, as coach Rachel Mazza exclaimed. Yet the Panthers were far from unhappy as they cleaned up the field Tuesday at Bicentennial Veterans Memorial Park in The Bronx.

Making its first appearance in the CHSAA Archdiocesan final since 2004, Preston fell to St. Joseph by the Sea, 1-0, when Madeline Giannini’s bloop to short right field with the bases loaded was caught by a sliding Kristy Colangelo.

“We’re getting over the hump, absolutely,” Mazza said.

And the best should be yet to come. Preston’s pitcher Tuesday was a freshman (Julianna Orrico). So was its cleanup hitter and third baseman (Danielle Kibler), leadoff hitter and right fielder (Giannini) and first baseman (Victoria Rivera).

Robert Cole

Preston pitcher Julianna Orrico gave up just one run on three hits against powerhouse St. Joseph by the Sea.

Orrico gave up one run on three hits in seven innings against Sea and the lone run came in the first inning. She gave up just two hits thereafter and only one runner to second base. This, coming after a brilliant performance against Moore Catholic in the semifinals.

“We’re just gonna keep pushing,” Orrico said. “We played great. We’re gonna use that spark in the next few years.”

Kibler, meanwhile, is a vacuum at third base and did an incredible job filling in for graduated star Laura Montalto both in the field and at bat. Sea coach Mike Ponsiglione said his team was very wary of Kibler.

“I’m hoping she’s really bright and graduates next year,” he said. “She’s a stud. If you look at my pitching chart, we have her highlighted.”

The only player Preston loses from this team is senior catcher Kitty Lajqi. Center fielder Megan Kelly, shortstop Jessica Signore, left fielder Franki Primiani and second baseman Melissa Santiago are juniors.

“Did we expect championship?” Mazza said. “They made us believe. We could only get better. They’re so young.”

If this team put Preston, typically looked past because of its geography, back on the city map, then next year and the year after could be when the Panthers finally break through with that elusive Archdiocesan title.

Ponsiglione, whose team has won six of the last eight crowns, is prepared.

“They ain’t going away anytime soon,” he said. “They’re great. They’re losing one player. This team is good. They’re gonna be making a lot of noise.”

PSAL ‘A’ semifinals set: Randall’s Island will play host to the PSAL Class A semifinals Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

No. 1 Tottenville and No. 4 Construction will meet on Field 15, while No. 2 Susan Wagner and No. 6 Francis Lewis meet on nearby Field 12. The games will happen at the same time – there will be no doubleheader like in previous years.

Tottenville beat Construction, 15-2, in a crossover league game this season. Wagner beat Lewis, 5-0, in a non-league game after falling to Lewis in last year’s quarterfinals.

Goldbach remains perfect in league contests:Victoria Goldbach, Archbishop Molloy's Catholic University-bound pitcher, hasn’t lost a CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens game in her three-year varsity career after helping lead the Stanners to a 3-2 Game 1 win over St. Francis Prep in the diocesan championship series Wednesday.

Goldbach allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out seven and did so without her signature changeup being sharp. She kept her team close, allowing Molloy to rally for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win it.

“I actually like pitching in pressure situations,” Goldbach said. “I feel like it gives me a little more drive."

She has been truly the Stanners ace this season with Maria Palmeri missing time because of a back injury. Goldbach wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the fifth, limited SFP to just two runs in the fifth and left two runners on in the sixth.

“When her change up is working it’s a different game for her,” Molloy coach Maureen Rosenbaum said.

Menna’s bat coming alive for SFP: Terriers catcher Jessica Menna entered the postseason in a slump at the plate, but appears to be coming out of it. The sophomore started the seventh inning rally against Mary Louis with a single and collected two more hits in a loss to Molloy in the diocesan championship series.

“It comes with time,” St. Francis Prep coach Ann Marie Rich said. “I’m very proud of her. She is working hard. We are happy with what we are seeing right now.

CHSAA Brooklyn/Queens A title game postponed until after Memorial Day: The final showdown between No. 1 Bishop Kearney and No. 2 St. Edmund originally scheduled for May 18 at Our Lady of Grace field was moved to May 22 because of inclement weather. The teams were unable to secure a playable field and will not have to wait until May 29 at Gill Hodges to decide a champion because of a Kearney junior trip Thursday and Memorial Day Weekend, according to St. Edmund coach Rowena Motylewski.

3 STARS

Zach Parise

After not speaking to the media following a 3-0 Game 3 loss on Saturday, Parise had two goals and an assist. He set up Travis Zajac’s first-period goal before adding a power-play goal and an empty netter in the third period.

Martin Brodeur

Brodeur may not have made as many brilliant saves as he did in Game 3, but he did stop 28 Rangers shots, only allowing a late goal to Ruslan Fedotenko.

Bryce Salvador

The Devils defenseman scored the game’s first goal, his third of the playoffs after not scoring once during the regular season. He also added an assist on Parise’s empty-net goal, and now has 10 points in 15 playoff games this year.

KEY MOMENT

With the Devils holding a 2-0 lead, the Rangers’ Derek Stepan took a penalty for high-sticking 2:37 into the third period. It took Zach Parise just four seconds to score, and any chance the Rangers had at a comeback was over.

Yahoo! deal

Yahoo! will sell half of its 40 percent stake in Alibaba Group, China’s largest e-commerce provider, back to the Asian company for about $7.1 billion, the companies announced late yesterday. The deal includes $6.3 billion in cash. Struggling Yahoo! needs the cash to fund a turnaround.

Relief signs

Economists are growing slightly more optimistic about recovery in the job and housing markets but expect other pillars of the economy to remain weak. Forecasters expect modest growth for the remainder of the year, with the pace picking up next year.

Asian slump

Asian currencies are poised to keep falling after the biggest decline in eight months as the region’s economy slumps more than investors expect, spurring more interest-rate cuts. Global money managers are expected to favor the dollar’s safety over riskier assets, according to a Citi report.

Cheaper gas

The average price for regular gasoline fell 6.19 cents in the past two weeks to $3.7833 a gallon, according to a national survey.

Lin's agent says Knicks deal no slam dunk
[info]sara_annofyh

Free agency is 5 1/2 weeks away, but Jeremy Lin’s agent already is setting the groundwork for what could be a complicated negotiation.

Roger Montgomery, in a rare interview, told The Post nothing is assured regarding Lin’s Knicks future, despite interim coach Mike Woodson’s declaration the global phenom — who becomes a restricted free agent on July 1 — would “absolutely’’ return.

When asked if he expects the Knicks negotiation to be cut-and-dried, Montgomery forewarned: “I don’t expect that. We’re not anticipating that’s going to happen. We don’t have assurances of anything. I know history shows most restricted free agents go back to their team, but I’m not going to assume anything. We’re waiting to see what happens.’’

JEREMY LIN: May draw other offers.

JEREMY LIN: May draw other offers.

Montgomery’s emphatic remarks — coupled with Lin’s “nothing’s set in stone’’ comment on Trash Bag Day — seem to be strategic messaging.

There is a possibility the Knicks will force Lin, 24, and his reps to find the point guard’s market value by first signing an offer sheet from another team, which must project Lin’s potential from a 26-game window when he played starter’s minutes.

Lin, who made $762,000 this season, also must find a club that feels the Knicks won’t match the offer. The good news for Montgomery is in the new collective bargaining agreement, teams have just three days to match an offer, less than the prior seven-day window that hamstrung teams.

Montgomery must create the impression the Knicks are not locks to retain Lin to spur teams to present an offer sheet. A source confirmed Toronto, which has a large Chinese population, will be one suitor.

The Knicks ultimately control Lin’s destiny because they cannot be outbid. And if the Players Association wins its arbitration hearing and restores Lin’s early Bird rights, it is a virtual certainty the Knicks will match any offer because the Bird exception means teams can exceed the salary cap to re-sign players.

That would allow the Knicks to keep their $5 million mid-level exception to sign a solid, veteran point guard from a list that starts with Steve Nash but also includes Jameer Nelson, Andre Miller, Ramon Sessions, Lou Williams and Raymond Felton.

A source said the arbitration hearing date will be set this week. If the union loses and the Knicks need their $5M mid-level exception to re-sign Lin, it could get trickier.

Under the CBA, teams under the cap — such as Toronto — can offer Lin the league’s average salary of about $5M for the first two years, then jack the third and fourth years to the maximum of $15 million. The club is permitted to do so only if it is far enough below the cap to take in the average wage of Lin’s four-year offer. Such a “back-loaded offer’’ causes concerns for the Knicks, who by the third year of Lin’s contract would be well over the luxury-tax apron of $74 million, costing them a heavy tax and their full mid-level exception as a taxpayer.

However, the financial boon of having Lin as a Knick for the next four years may be too sweet to consider future luxury-tax penalties. The Knicks’ merchandising in the U.S. and Asia may go through the roof as owner James Dolan looks to recoup the $850 million he invested into the Garden transformation. Lin’s No. 17 jersey was the second-biggest seller in the NBA for the year despite only being available from February on.

On the basketball side, Lin plays the position at which the Knicks are neediest. If they are comfortable his rehab from a torn meniscus finishes well, it will be tough for them not to match, even for their entire $5M mid-level exception.

Montgomery said Lin is in the final stages of his rehab and will head to his native Northern California soon.

“He’s doing well, trying still [to] get stronger and heal,’’ Montgomery said.

The hope is for Lin to participate in July’s Olympic training camp as a member of the U.S. Select Team that practices against Team USA. However, if he is still unsigned, that could be curtailed.

“It hasn’t been settled, but he’d be excited to do it,’’ Montgomery said.

Breaking bread

Bankrupt Hostess is set to present a new proposal in the next day or so to a federal judge to help prevent Twinkie the Kid from riding off to the sunset.

Hostess — in an effort to stave off liquidation — is likely looking to raise its level of commitment to the pension funds from its earlier proposal and may concede that new employees can be enrolled in the pension plans. Earlier, Hostess had asked that new workers be placed in 401(k) plans.

The new plan comes days after Judge Robert Drain told Hostess, maker of Twinkies and Wonder Bread, and the Teamsters union that each of their reorganization plans had merits, without fully endorsing either.

“Basically, he said you have to work this out and come back to us,” a source close to the talks said. “He doesn’t give the parties a lot of other choices.”

Hostess had threatened recently in bankruptcy court that it would be forced into liquidation if it could not modify the labor agreement. Hostess filed for bankruptcy in January.

The company’s lenders, who hold most of the cards, have made it clear they would not accept the Teamsters’ reorganization plan, since they believe it would ultimately sink the business, a source close to the talks said.

Creditors — who may also need to soften their stance — have given the money-losing baker, which employs 18,400 workers, a $75 million credit line.

Those lenders — led by hedge fund Silver Point Partners — are also presently meeting with two suitors, including KPS Partners, which have previously made offers for Hostess that were rejected as too low. Many of the rank-and-file bakers and drivers (a 25-year worker makes between $65,000 and $80,000 a year) do not trust Hostess.

A Queens driver said, “A lot of — if not all of — the guys at my depot think the company is mismanaged and is using bankruptcy as a tool to restructure, like the airlines.”

There are three depots and roughly 300 Hostess routes in the New York metro area delivering Twinkies and Wonder Bread, the driver said. Hostess last year closed a baking plant in Jamaica, Queens.

Private-equity firm Ripplewood Holdings bought Hostess out of bankruptcy in February 2009 with much higher hopes.

Plans included making the business bigger, more innovative and healthier, a Hostess source said. Hostess was in talks to acquire Sara Lee’s bread business, but in May 2010 Sara Lee CEO Brenda Barnes suffered a stroke, and those talks ended.

Grupo Bimbo, which already owned Entenmann’s, eventually bought the Sara Lee division, while Flowers Foods bought Tasty Baking, giving both buyers more pricing power than languishing Hostess.

“The consolidation of competitors hurt,” the source said.

Hostess and the Teamsters are not that far apart on many key issues, like salary cuts and the amount of pension contributions. The big gap is over how to restructure worker pensions, with the firm seeking to stop contributing to 20 of the union’s 22 pension funds, which cover Teamster workers at other companies as well. Many of them are underfunded.
